Esclarecendo (ou não) Gaza (atenção à violência das imagens)

O conflito entre Israel e a Palestina tem muito, muito tempo. Apesar de as datas concretas não serem claras, possivelmente começou no início do séc. 20. É dos conflitos mais “incuráveis” a nível mundial. Extrema violência numa zona repleta de lugares histórico-culturais e religiosos, onde os direitos humanos não são respeitados.

Gaza faz parte dos territórios palestinianos e só tem 41 Km de comprimento. Tem elevada escassez de água e basicamente nenhuma indústria. Vivem lá quase 2 milhões de pessoas, na sua grande maioria refugiados palestinianos. E porque precisaram de refúgio? Porque nos finais dos anos 40 a guerra entre árabes e israelitas estava ao rubro, bem como a própria guerra civil dentro da Palestina. Quase 1 milhão de pessoas foram expulsas das suas casas. Os motivos diferem, quando ouvidos por Israel ou quando ouvidos pela Palestina. Creio que já nem sabem o que dizem e nem aquilo que realmente corresponde à verdade.

Mas se há algo que está na base deste conflito são os judeus. Estes viviam na Palestina e com a sucessiva passagem de poder sobre o estado palestiniano, modificavam-se as ideias sobre o que fazer aos judeus. Após os acontecimentos hediondos perpetrados pelos nazis, as grandes potências mundiais, em conjunto com a ONU, resolveram dividir a Palestina em dois territórios: 55% para um estado judeu e 45% para os árabes. Os judeus aceitaram e fundaram Israel. Ora esta decisão não foi aceite pelos árabes. O movimento sionista (judeus) pretendia a criação de um Estado Nacional Judaico. Queriam um espaço, um terreno por aquelas paragens, poder e independência. E assim começa uma carnificina que dura até hoje. Palestina ataca de um lado e Israel do outro. Várias resoluções e tratados de paz foram acordados e quebrados.

Breves:

• Os britânicos mandaram na Palestina. Os egípcios mandaram na Palestina.
• Outras guerras dentro da própria guerra surgiram, envolvendo países europeus aliados de ambas as partes. A U. Soviética ficou ao lado do estado de Israel, estado esse que os árabes da Palestina continuavam a não reconhecer.
• Tem sido impossível estabelecer territorialmente um limite entre estes dois países, dado que, ao contrário do que a comunidade internacional pede, Israel continua a avançar na anexação das regiões em volta.
• Os ataques de Israel são mais intensos dada a tecnologia de ponta. Possuem até sistemas antimísseis. Raramente são afectados. Como resposta bombardeiam a Faixa de Gaza.
• Temos ainda a Cisjordânia (situada na parte ocidental do território israelo-palestiniano), que actualmente está ocupada por Israel, mas que a Palestina e a Jordânia reclamam para si.
• Em 1993, vários membros europeus e os EUA tentaram ajudar os chefes de ambos os estados a chegarem a um acordo, mas mais uma vez as negociações falharam. Com Yasser Arafat houve muita esperança na mediação do conflito, de forma a ter fim… sol de pouca dura.
• No dia 25 de Fevereiro de 1994, o massacre que ficou conhecido como Cave of the Patriarchs massacre, o israelita Baruch Goldstein, do movimento Kach, abriu fogo contra vários palestinianos que rezavam na Mesquita de Abrãao, por altura do Ramadão. Vários mortos e feridos como saldo que só não aumentou porque os sobreviventes espancaram até à morte Goldstein.
• Assassinatos de políticos importantes de parte a parte mantiveram a guerra acesa.
• Desde 2006, o Hamas (partido político considerado por muitos como um grupo terrorista) assumiu a Palestina, vencendo as eleições parlamentares. Os princípios do partido são todos baseados no Corão (livro sagrado do islamismo).
• Em 2010, com a ajuda de Obama, presidente dos EUA, os dois “países” acordaram mediar o conflito e dar tréguas. Mas rapidamente se retomaram os bombardeamentos, com Israel a culpar Hamas (partido que rege a Palestina) e vice-versa. O Egipto consegue então que os dois estados façam um acordo de paz.
• Dado o poderio financeiro e militar de Israel, as mortes de palestinianos são sete vezes superiores aos israelitas mortos.

Actualmente…

No dia 12 de Junho de 2014 desapareceram três adolescentes israelitas que estavam na Cisjordânia. Foram encontrados mortos no dia 30 do mesmo mês. Israel culpou o Hamas pelo assassinato dos três jovens e assim começou mais uma chacina. No dia 2 de Julho, Israel queimou um jovem palestiniano em Jerusalém, como vingança. Até hoje, nunca mais pararam.

Simplifiquemos o que ambos querem (se é que ainda lutam por isto ou por outra coisa qualquer):

• Reconhecimento mútuo das fronteiras de cada um dos países (cada um quer mais para si e têm pouco interesse numa divisão equitativa);
• Direitos à água e a outros (escassos) bens;
• Controlo de Jerusalém e Cisjordânia;
• Liberdade para a Palestina e retorno dos seus refugiados.

Uma coisa é certa: palestinianos matam judeus e judeus matam árabes. Quase um século depois desconfio que já nem sabem bem os motivos pelos quais se andam a matar.

Clarifying (or not) Gaza (beware of the violent  images)

The conflict between Israel and Palestine started a long, long time ago. Though specific dates are not accurate, it possibly started in the beginning of the 20^th century. It is one of the most “incurable” worldwide. Extreme violence in a place full of historical, cultural and sacred places, where human rights are not respected.

Gaza is part of Palestinian territory and has only 41 km long. Water is a rare good and there is basically no industry. Almost 2 million people live there, most of them Palestinian refugees. And why do they need to seek refuge? Because in the late 40’s war between Arabs and Israelites was at its peak, as well as the civil war inside Palestine. Nearly 1 million people were expelled from their homes. Motives differ, when told by Israel or Palestine. I believe they don’t know what they are saying or what really corresponds to the truth anymore.

But if there’s something on the basis of this conflict, Jews are. They lived in Palestine and with constant change of power over Palestinian state, ideas about what to do with them also changed. After the hideous happenings perpetrated by Nazis, world powers together with UN, decided to divide Palestine into two territories: 55% to a Jewish state and 45% to the Arabs. The Jews accepted the division and founded Israel. The decision wasn’t accepted by Arabs. The Zionist movement (Jews) wanted to create a National Jewish State. They wanted a place, a territory in that area, power and independence. And that’s how the carnage that lasts till today started. Palestine strikes from one side and Israel strikes back from the other. Multiple solutions and peace treaties were celebrated and then broken.

In short:

• British ruled Palestine. Egyptians ruled Palestine.
• Other wars inside the war itself have risen, involving European countries allied of both parties. The Soviet Union supported Israel, state which Arabs from Palestine still do not recognize.
• It has been impossible to establish terrestrial limits between these two countries, once that, contrary to what international community demands, Israel continues occupying surrounding  territories.
• Israel strikes are more violent due to the high technology they possess. They even have anti-missile systems. They are rarely hit. In response they attack the Gaza Strip.
• There’s still Cisjordan (situated in the western part of Israeli-Palestinian side of the territory), presently occupied by Israel, but also claimed by Palestine and Jordan.
• In 1993 several European members and The USA tried to help governments from both sides to reach an agreement, but once again negotiations failed. With Yasser Arafat hope grew on the mediation of the conflict so it could come to an end… it didn’t last long.
• On 25^th February 1994 the massacre that became known as Cave of the Patriarchs Massacre, the Israelite Baruch Golstein, from Kach movement, set  fire on several Palestinians who prayed on Abraham Temple during Ramadan. The result was several dead and injured and the number wasn’t higher because survivors beat Goldstein to death.
• Important politicians murders from side to side kept the war opened.
• Since 2006, Hamas (political party considered by many as a terrorist group) took over Palestine by winning parliamentary elections. The party principles are based on Koran (the holy book of the Islamic religion).
• In 2010, with help from President Obama, the two “countries” agreed to mediate the conflict and call truces. But bombing soon began again, with Israel blaming the Hamas (party that rules Palestine) and vice versa. Egypt then managed the two states to sign a peace treaty.
• Due to Israel financial and military power, the rate of Palestinian deaths are seven times higher than Israelites.

Nowadays…

On 12^th June 2014 three Israelite teenagers were missing in Cisjordan. They were found dead on 30^th that same month.  Israel blamed the Hamas for the murder of the three young men and carnage started again. On 2^nd July, Israel burned a Palestinian young man alive in Jerusalem, as an act of revenge. Till today, they didn’t stop.

Let’s simplify what both want (if they’re still fighting for anything at all):

Mutual recognition of frontiers between two countries (each one wants more for itself and they show little interest in an equitable division;

Right to water and other (scarce) goods;

Control of Jerusalem and Cisjordan;

Freedom to Palestine and return of Palestinian refugees.

One thing is for sure: Palestinians kill Jews and Jews kill Arabs. Almost a century after, I suspect that they don’t know anymore the motives why they continue to kill each other.
